A fiberglass phinisi builder in Indonesia usually means one of two things: a yard moulding small FRP replicas for day use, or — far more commonly at yacht scale — a traditional wooden-phinisi yard applying epoxy-fiberglass sheathing over an ironwood hull below the waterline. Full fiberglass construction is confined to boats under roughly 20 metres.
Confusion around fiberglass and phinisi comes from three very different products sharing one word. First, the pure FRP replica: moulded hull, phinisi styling, typically under 20 metres, used for day charters and resort shuttles. Second, the sheathed traditional hull: keel, frames and planking raised in timber the ancestral way, then wrapped below the waterline in fiberglass cloth set in epoxy. Third, the pure timber vessel protected only by caulking and antifouling, exactly as raised on the beaches of South Sulawesi for generations. Each is legitimate; they simply serve different owners. Our hull construction guide covers the structural stages common to the second and third routes.
Fiberglass production economics depend on moulds amortised over many hulls. A one-off 35-metre mould would cost more than the timber hull it replaces, which is why no Indonesian yard offers charter-scale FRP phinisi as a standard product. There is also a market reason: guests booking a Komodo liveaboard are buying the heritage of hand-raised timber, and operators tell us plainly that a moulded hull does not command wooden-hull rates.
The strongest case for fiberglass in phinisi work is protective, not structural. Tropical waters host teredo shipworm, and moisture cycling works caulked seams over years of service. An epoxy-fiberglass skin applied over dry, sound planking closes both attack routes. Done correctly — timber moisture measured and recorded, fastenings inspected, cloth weight and resin system specified, every layer photographed for the survey file — sheathing extends underwater maintenance intervals significantly while the ironwood and bitti structure continues to carry all loads.
Sequencing matters as much as materials. On a new build, sheathing is scheduled after the hull has been launched, floated to working moisture equilibrium and then hauled again — applying cloth over green, still-moving timber is the classic failure mode. In a typical 18 to 24 month programme this places the sheathing package late in year two, immediately before final antifouling and trials. On an existing vessel, the same rule applies in reverse: plan a proper drying period on the slip before any cloth touches the planking. Yards that promise sheathing in a week, straight after haul-out, are optimising for invoices rather than for the twenty-year life of the skin.
For anything above 25 metres intended for charter or serious cruising, commission a traditionally raised timber hull and decide on epoxy-fiberglass sheathing as a protection option with your surveyor — that combination keeps heritage value, survey confidence and maintenance economics aligned. Reserve full FRP for tenders and day craft, where it genuinely excels.
